The Ice Cube is first mentioned and appears in Artemis Fowl and The Atlantis Complex. Newly invented by Artemis himself, the device is (according to Artemis) designed to propel tiny, reflective nano-wafers into the skies over Iceland. Descending with snow as camouflage, the smart wafers would turn themselves uniformly to face the right side up, reflecting the scorching Sun's rays and thus preventing further melting of the glaciers. Artemis demonstrated its vitality with his state-of-the-art (or, at least as Foaly put it, for the humans) holographic screen. The screen, which before being opened resembled a normal briefcase made of reinforced metal containing a laptop, has motors, and later transformed into a large screen exceeding a metre across and long. It can depict three-dimensional models and, after his fingerprint has been approved by the screen and v-gloves put on, a person can alter and construct new models at will

Wing Commander Vinyaya, Foaly and Holly Short impressed by his solution after the demonstration, Artemis took them through and out the back of the Great Skua restaurant to demonstrate the capability of his project. Having set Holly the task of uncovering the tarpaulin-covered Cube, Artemis refused to work the Cube unless the unidentified craft he had picked up on his satellite moves off the scene. After a short moment of dispute, their ship was destroyed, Vinyaya killed in the process.

In an excerpt Eoin Colfer read at Waterstone's, not long after the three stranded survivors have regrouped, the Ice Cube was pulled under when the thin ice underneath gave way, plunging the demolished ship and the nearby Cube into the Arctic waters. The excerpt left off with Holly cursing and sprinting off towards the crevasse, with Foaly chatting airily on her statement about Dwarf cheese with Artemis's alter ego, the carefree Orion.
