Domovoi Butler (commonly known as Butler) is a giant, Eurasian bodyguard associated with Artemis Fowl II. He had in old days a nickname which was Dom. He has protected Artemis since his birth (he spent Artemis' first few days standing guard over the Sisters of Mercy maternity ward), and has seen many strange things because of this, not to mention becoming the only Mud Man to fight a troll and live to tell about it. Maybe Butler was born to be a bodyguard because "Domovoi" was the name of a Slavic guardian spirit. He is described also, as one of the most dangerous men in the world.
As he revealed to Nguyen Xuan in the first book, Butler wields a variety of weapons including an automatic Sig Sauer in a shoulder holster, throwing knives in his boots, a two-shot Derringer pistol up his sleeve, garrotte wire hidden in his watch, three stun grenades in various pockets, and a "good old ball bearing cosh stuffed down his shirt." However, the only weapon he has been seen using in the book is the Sig Sauer, even in situations where the other weapons may have been useful.

[edit] Role
Butler is a member of the Butler family, a family best known for its relationship with the Fowls. The Butlers have been serving the Fowls as bodyguards since the Norman conquest.
His current employer (known as a "principal") is Artemis Fowl II. He is 45 years old
[edit] Description
He is described as almost seven feet tall and weighing 90 kilograms (200lbs), with deep blue eyes, almost black. He has a shaven head, but in the graphic novel he has a full head of hair. Like all Butlers, he was trained by Madame Ko's Bodyguard Academy, where he was trained in Cordon Bleu cooking, marksmanship, a blend of different martial arts, emergency medicine, and information technology.
He uses a 9mm SIG Sauer handgun, possibly of the P220 series.
[edit] Family
Little is known about Butler's family, besides his younger sister Juliet. It is revealed in Artemis Fowl and Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident that Butler's uncle (the Major) was Artemis Fowl I's bodyguard. However, in the explosion of the Fowl Star, the Major was killed and his body turned up in a morgue. He also has an unnamed relative that is supposedly more dangerous than him.
[edit] Events
Butler is involved in many significant events during the series.
In the first book, during the siege of Fowl Manor, Butler disarms the elite squadron of the LEPRetrieval fairy police force, and becomes the first known human to fight a troll, survive, and win.
In Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code, Butler takes a bullet to the chest from Arno Blunt during an ambush by Jon Spiro and his colleagues. He is cryogenically preserved at the Ice Age Cryogenics Institute for three hours before being healed by Holly Short of the Lower Elements Police. The healing uses up some of his own life-force, making him appear and feel about fifteen years older and also gives him a Kevlar-reinforced chest ( he is the only man to have a living bulletproof body but only protects from small bullets). Afterward, he is subjected to a "selective mind wipe" by the Lower Elements Police to erase all fairy-related memories, as they viewed him and Artemis as a threat to fairy civilization, (however, his memories are restored in Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception). Also, Butler was subjected to a 'Dewer' treatment, which was taking fat from a dwarf's behind (later, revealed to be Mulch Diggums) and injecting it to another area to make him appear younger.
It is mentioned in the last few pages of Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony that twelve year old Minerva Paradizo gets Butler started reading fiction. Artemis notices classics including Moby Dick, Gormenghast, The Art of War, and Gone with the Wind, where he was awaiting Artemis's return.
Butler also appeared in Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox. At first his role is minor, as he was sent to China to find an old friend of his who knew a variety of special medicine treatments, in the hopes of him curing Angeline Fowl. Later in the book, after Artemis and Holly travel back in time to find the silky sifaka lemur, Butler's past self appears and captures Artemis and Holly on their arrival. He locks them in the Fowl Bentley's trunk while he and Artemis go to steal the lemur. They escape with the help of Mulch Diggums, and face the bodyguard again when he and a ten-year-old Artemis try to steal Jayjay. He knocks out Holly with a tranquilizer dart when she attempts to foil their plans. He feels bad about this as he doesn't know what the drugs are doing to her. Jayjay escapes nonetheless, and Butler remembers that silky sifaka lemurs go to climb to the highest point possible when frightened. The past Artemis realizes that the lemur is heading towards the pylons. Butler and Artemis go in pursuit of Jayjay, only to seemingly be beaten by an older Artemis. Unable to accept defeat, Artemis the younger tells Butler to shoot Jayjay if his older self doesn't hand it over to him. He later manages to capture Holly Short again, by lying in disguise as a local in Morocco. He brings Holly to Damon Kronski to sell on Artemis' orders. He regrets what he has done as he sees Holly as too human. To make up for this, he helps Holly escape from the Extinctionists. When Artemis and Holly return from the past, they find that Butler has been mesmerized by Opal Koboi, placing Holly and No1 in animal fat to disable their magic. He fights her to get back his self-control, only to have a heart-attack in the process. He is saved by a ten-year-old Artemis via a defibrillation machine.
[edit] Trivia
It is said in the Opal Deception that only two (later three) people know Butler's first name. The first is Juliet, the second is Artemis Fowl and the third is unknown, presumably either Madame Ko or another relative. It is said in the Eternity Code that after Juliet's "exam", she receives this message from Madame Ko: "Domovoi needs you." Juliet says, "You mean Butler?" From this, you can assume that Juliet knows that Madame Ko knows Butler's first name, making her the third person.
